The desert planet of Arrakis, known as Dune, is one of the most memorable worlds in science fiction. The culture and environment of the planet, from the use of special suits to recycle moisture to the presence of giant sandworms that produce a precious spice, are indelible in the mind of readers. What sets Dune apart from other science fiction novels of its time is its inclusion of rounded, important, and strong female characters. The protagonist, Jessica, and her son Paul are characters that readers genuinely care about. The novel combines elements of fantasy with a feudal structure and imaginative use of science, creating a unique and captivating world. While the later books in the series have been criticized for becoming bloated and deviating from the original story, the first novel of Dune is entrancing and showcases science fiction at its best.
