The Tortoise & the Hare

Get ready for a timeless and captivating tale with "The Tortoise & the Hare" Hardcover Picture Book. This stunning and virtually wordless picture book, created by acclaimed author and illustrator Jerry Pinkney, brings a fresh and vibrant interpretation to the classic fable. Set in the scenic American Southwest, "The Tortoise & the Hare" follows the story of two competitors, each wearing their own unique bandana, as they prepare to embark on a legendary race. With a map of the course through the desert depicted on the endpapers, readers are immediately transported to a world of cacti, rocks, and anticipation. Using a combination of watercolor, colored pencil, and pastel paintings, Pinkney brings the characters to life in a way that is both visually striking and full of personality.

Against the backdrop of the desert's natural browns and tans, the animals stand out in vibrant colors, creating a captivating contrast. Throughout the book, Pinkney expertly propels the story forward with long horizontal lines and dynamic illustrations of the hare bounding away, leaving the tortoise behind in a trail of dust. The limited text, used sparingly but effectively, emphasizes the story's central theme - that the journey is just as important as the destination. The words "slow," "slow and," and "slow and steady" are gradually added to the text, reinforcing the moral of the story. But this book isn't just about the race.

Pinkney takes care to show the tortoise overcoming challenges and the hare demonstrating good sportsmanship and healthy competition. It's a story that reminds us of the value of perseverance, humility, and friendship.
