Blackmail Special Edition [Blu-ray]

**** The "Blackmail Special Edition" Blu-ray offers an intriguing deep dive into Alfred Hitchcock's pioneering work in film, showcasing both the silent and sound versions of his groundbreaking 1929 film, "Blackmail." This release has garnered attention for its comprehensive restoration by the British Film Institute (BFI), making it an essential addition for collectors and fans of classic cinema alike. Customers have expressed appreciation for the unique dual offering of both versions of the film, allowing for a detailed comparison between the silent and sound formats. The childhood curiosity about the behind-the-scenes elements, such as Hitchcock’s legendary approach to filmmaking and the peculiar circumstances surrounding Anny Ondra’s dubbing, has also resonated with viewers. Ondra’s voice was dubbed due to a perceived thick Czech accent, an aspect that curious fans of film history have found interesting, especially as her sound test proves otherwise. The commentary by film historian Tim Lucas enhances the viewer’s experience, as he discusses the nuances and peculiarities of each version, bridging the emotional disconnect between the two formats. However, some viewers noted a strange experience regarding the aspect ratio discrepancies between the two versions, with the cropped image on the sound version being a point of contention. In addition to the film itself, the inclusion of bonus features such as the silent version with a newly composed score and Ondra's sound test adds value to this collection. Despite some technical concerns, the critical reception highlights the importance of the film in cinematic history and Hitchcock’s evolution as a filmmaker. Overall, the "Blackmail Special Edition" Blu-ray has received a favorable reception for its rich historical context, thorough extras, and the blend of nostalgia and cinematic innovation that Hitchcock represents. **
